Silver wedding anniversary gift ideas

Twenty-five years in, a couple isn't at the own-everything stage yet — but it's the first anniversary big enough that the usual card and bottle of wine stops feeling like enough.

A silver wedding is a different problem from the ruby, golden or diamond versions of this same list. At twenty-five years, most couples don't yet own everything — they're still working, the mortgage might not be paid off, and a big holiday or a genuinely nice object can still land well. What's harder to get right is the scale of it: twenty-five is clearly a milestone, so a card and dinner out undersells it, but it isn't the once-in-a-lifetime occasion a fiftieth or sixtieth is either.

The traditional gift for a silver wedding is, unsurprisingly, silver — cutlery, jewellery, a photo frame. None of it is wrong, but the same rule that applies at thirty, forty, fifty and sixty years applies here too: the gifts that actually land are about the marriage, not the metal. See pearl wedding anniversary gift ideas for the thirtieth-year version of this same problem, ruby wedding anniversary gift ideas for the fortieth, or golden wedding anniversary gift ideas for the fiftieth.

The King's anniversary message — not this one

What tends to land

  1. 1

The wedding day, before the retelling wears it smooth

Twenty-five years produces a version of the wedding day that's been told at enough family occasions to run on autopilot — the version with the good stories kept in and the nerves left out. What actually happened, who nearly didn't make it, what went wrong that nobody mentions any more, usually hasn't been written down.

  2. 2

The years in between, not just the start

A fifth anniversary is easy to write about; a twenty-fifth has a quarter-century of ordinary life behind it — house moves, jobs that came and went, raising a family, the years that were genuinely hard. Most of that has never been asked about directly, only lived through.

  3. 3

    A weekend away, properly organised

Not a grand gesture — a couple of nights somewhere neither of them has to cook, clean or drive, with someone else handling the booking. At this stage that's often worth more than an object.

  4. 4

Something from each child, if there are any

A silver wedding often falls when children are old enough to write something themselves rather than have it written for them — a page each about what the marriage has looked like from the outside, bound together rather than signed on a card.

What to think twice about

  • Silver-themed ornaments and tableware. The tradition is real; a lot of what's sold under it is the kind of thing that gets used once and put away.
  • Engraved anything. It can't be re-gifted or discreetly retired — you're choosing an object they must keep, whether or not they'd have chosen it.
  • A repeat of the wedding-day honeymoon, without checking first. Budgets, jobs and what they'd actually enjoy now can be a long way from what suited them twenty-five years ago.
  • Anything that needs an account and a password. If it needs setup, it needs you to do the setup — and to explain it again a month later.

Getting the twenty-five years into something that lasts

Ask a couple twenty-five years in how they met and the answer comes out fully formed — practised at enough dinners to be reliable and short. What's underneath it tends to be more interesting: what nearly stopped it, what their parents thought at the time, what advice they were actually given and whether they took it.

“What's the best piece of advice anyone gave you about marriage or partnership?”

— One of the 52 weekly prompts

A question like that, asked in writing with time to sit with it, gets a different answer than the same question shouted across a table at a party. How to record your parents' life story covers how to ask that kind of question without it feeling like an interview, and questions to ask your parents has a free list to start from if a full year of prompts is more than this occasion needs.

StoryPrompt does it on a weekly timer: one question by email, answered in their own words, compiled into a typeset book you can download for as long as StoryPrompt runs. A few of the year's questions cover exactly this stretch — how they met, the best advice they were given about marriage, and the first home that was properly their own. £25, once buys the full year. Not a subscription, and the book stays downloadable once the year of questions ends.

If the silver wedding falls near Christmas, Christmas gifts for elderly parents has the other non-object options; for the thirtieth-, fortieth-, fiftieth- and sixtieth-year versions of this same occasion, see pearl, ruby, golden and diamond wedding anniversary gift ideas.
